Getting Started
How do I import a PDF?
Tap the + button on the home screen and choose a PDF from Files, iCloud Drive, or any connected storage provider. You can also use the Share sheet from other apps to send PDFs directly to Parefy.
Does Parefy require an internet connection?
No. Parefy works entirely offline. All PDF processing happens on your device. No files are uploaded anywhere.
Does Parefy work on iPad?
Yes. Parefy is a universal app that runs natively on both iPhone and iPad.
Compress PDFs
What is target-size compression?
Target-size mode lets you set the exact file size you need (for example, 5 MB for an email attachment). Parefy's compression engine automatically finds the best strategy to reach your target while keeping text readable. Tap Compress, select Target size, and drag the slider or type a custom value.
What do the compression levels mean?
- Keep Quality — minimal reduction, preserves original clarity
- Balanced — good size reduction with high readability
- Smaller File — significant reduction, slight quality trade-off
- Extreme — maximum compression for the smallest possible file
For most documents,
Balanced is the best starting point.
Will compression make my text blurry?
Parefy classifies each page (text, scanned, photo, mixed) and applies the right strategy for each. Text-heavy pages are compressed with structure-level optimizations that keep text sharp. Only image-heavy pages use raster compression, and even then quality floors prevent over-compression.
Why did my compressed file come out in black & white?
Parefy includes a
B&W scan optimization option that is
on by default. When a page looks like a scanned document, Parefy may convert it to crisp black & white to produce a much smaller file while keeping text readable. Color photos and color-rich pages are left untouched.
If you'd rather preserve the original grayscale tones or color shading on scanned pages, turn this off before compressing:
- Open the Compress tool and select your PDF
- Scroll to the Options section
- Toggle B&W scan optimization off
- Tap Compress again
Your choice is remembered for future compressions.
Why is the compressed file larger than expected?
Some PDFs are already well-optimized and can't be reduced further without quality loss. If Parefy can't beat the original size at your chosen quality level, it will keep the original to avoid making things worse.
Merge & Split
How do I merge PDFs?
Tap Merge on the home screen, select the files you want to combine, then drag to reorder them. Choose Append to combine back-to-back, or Interleave to alternate pages (useful for combining front/back scans). Tap Merge PDFs to create the combined document.
How do I extract specific pages?
Tap Extract, select a PDF, then choose the pages you want. You can pick individual pages, odd/even pages, or type custom ranges like 1-3, 7, 12-15. Tap Extract to create a new PDF with only those pages.
Organize PDFs
How do I reorder pages?
Tap Organize, select a PDF, then drag and drop page thumbnails to rearrange them. You can also tap a page and use Move to Page for precise placement. When you're happy with the order, tap Export.
Can I delete or rotate pages?
Yes. Select one or more pages in the thumbnail grid, then tap Rotate to turn them 90° at a time, or Delete to remove them. You can also long-press a page and tap another to select a range. All changes support undo and redo.
Can I insert blank pages or pages from another PDF?
Yes. Select a page and tap Insert to add a blank page or import pages from another PDF at that position. You can also duplicate selected pages. These are premium features available with Parefy Pro.
Why does Export only save some of my pages?
If you have pages selected, Export saves only those selected pages. To export the entire document, deselect all pages first (or select all pages). This lets you quickly extract a subset without switching to the Extract tool.
What does Reverse Page Order do?
It flips the entire document so the last page becomes the first. This is handy for documents scanned in the wrong order.
Does Organize support keyboard shortcuts on iPad?
Yes. On iPad with a keyboard, use ⌘Z to undo, ⌘⇧Z to redo, ⌘A to select all, ⌘R to rotate, and Delete to remove selected pages.
Sign Documents
How do I sign a PDF?
Tap Sign, select a PDF, then draw your signature on the canvas. Your signature is saved for reuse. On the PDF, pinch to resize, drag to position, and use two fingers to rotate. Tap Export when done.
Can I save multiple signatures?
Yes. You can create and save multiple signatures and choose which one to use each time you sign a document.
Scan & Photos to PDF
How does document scanning work?
Tap the scan button on the home screen and point your camera at a document. Parefy uses Apple's VisionKit for automatic edge detection, perspective correction, and image enhancement. You can scan multiple pages in one session.
Can I convert photos to PDF?
Yes. Tap Photos to PDF, choose photos from your library, and Parefy converts them into a single PDF document. You can choose quality presets to balance file size and image clarity.
Troubleshooting
The app can't open my PDF
Some PDFs may be damaged or use non-standard encoding. Try opening the file in Apple's Files app first to confirm it's valid. If the file is password-protected, use the Password tool to unlock it before using other tools.
Compression is taking a long time
Large PDFs (1,000+ pages) with many images take more time to process. The progress bar shows real-time status. You can cancel at any time without losing your original file. Target-size compression may take noticeably longer than preset modes because the engine makes several attempts to reach your exact target size.
Where are my exported files saved?
When you tap Save to Files, you choose the destination in the system file picker (iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or any connected storage provider). You can also tap Share to send directly to another app, AirDrop, or email.
